Oct. 12: Louis Moreau Gottschalk

By Ray Brown

Today, for our 4 O'Clock Request, it's one of those unexpected curve balls that we love to get.  It comes from Jacob in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and he's asked for a piece by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, one of the more fascinating, but also underrated, composers you'll run across from this country.  He was born in 1829 in New Orleans, which, especially at that time, must have been the very definition of a cultural melting pot.  And all of those various strains of voices, sounds, and musical flavors combined with the young boy's explosive innate talent as a musician.  He went off to Europe to study in Paris, but his music remains distinctively American in its flavor, as you'll hear in A Night in the Tropics, just after 4pm.
