My Favorites: Ringtone Mozart

By Amanda Goodwin

For the week of Valentine's Day, we'll be playing the music you love most, and in that spirit, here is the next in a series of what a few of us here at 99.5 All Classical love most.  Amanda Goodwin is the producer responsible for making our pledge drives sound interesting, lively, and, most of all, fun!

We hope these ideas prompt you to think through your favorites, which you can submit here!

Naming my favorite Classical piece, I have to admit, is easy. It’s Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 16 - and here’s why:

Before I graduated college I knew very little about classical music. I grew up in a home that rocked with the likes of Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, ACDC, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the occasional Run DMC.

After graduating I landed a production job at WSHU in Connecticut, a public radio station with NPR News and Classical Music. One of my responsibilities was to put together a nightly classical music show. The host picked the music and wrote her own copy - I made it sound good.

One night, she played Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 16, and I immediately recognized the music. I listened all the way through and by the end was both smiling and crying.

At the time I was living 149 miles away from my boyfriend, and I’d set up my phone to play a certain song when he called - the sweetest ringtone in the phone.  And until that night in the studio, I never knew it was Mozart.

Without even knowing, that boyfriend, who would later become my husband, lead me to the composer who would become my favorite.

It’s not a very technical reason - but what are favorites, if not personal?

Do you have a personal favorite?  Let us know what it is here.
