Music for Food for Music

Much is said about the power of music -- it can console, ignite,  enliven, and inspire us.  The internationally admired violist Kim Kashkashian, whose communicative playing taps deeply into music's power, is taking part in an incentive that leverages that power in another important way:  against hunger.  It's called Music for Food for Music.

Hunger is all around us -- right here in Massachusetts, within arm's reach.  It's here for many reasons, and the number of affected families and individuals has been rising because of the recent recession. "Food insecurity" is the term used by the Greater Boston Food Bank.

"This," says Kim Kashkashian, "just can't be."  And so she's taking action.  She's created a series of six early-evening chamber music concerts at Emanuel Church in Boston's Back Bay.

The next concert happens on Friday evening, Mar. 11, at 6:00, and, as with each concert in the series, it features a Viola Quintet by Mozart and a Cello Suite by Bach.

Gaining admission only means bringing non-perishable food items, or a check made out to Greater Boston Food Bank.  Kashkashian and her colleagues and students at the New England Conservatory of Music hope that a new level of awareness will come from these free, world-class, hour-long performances. I hope you'll consider participating.  The artistry will be at the most elevated, impassioned level.  The benefits will be at the most elemental and profound level.

Here are a couple of videos of Kim's extraordinary artistry.  In the first, she's joined by violinist Gidon Kremer, conductor Nicholas Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1984, and the second features her recent recording with pianist Robert Levin.
