Backstage with Brian Bell
and Chester Schmitz

For 35 years, Chester Schmitz played principal tuba with the BSO. In a 2001 conversation with Brian, he discusses his journey from teaching himself to play the sousaphone one summer in Iowa, to having a concerto written for him by John Williams. He also describes his modest collection of a dozen or so tubas, and his only solo recording — which didn't involve the tuba at all. (Photo: Betsy Bassett)
