Mad Musical Scientists: Latin Musicians Who Dare To Experiment

I was halfway through listening to Camila Moreno's "Incendie" when I wondered if there would ever be an end to the creative ways Latin Alternative artists explore music. How many ways can you rework four simple beats — or six beats in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Peruvian music — into something that stops listeners in their tracks?

This week, the young band Making Movies (and its producer, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos) shows us how deeply thought-out lyrics sound next to a rhythm track that somehow both propels and floats without violating the laws of physics.

Being a child of the 1970s, I was struck by how the Washington, D.C., band Empresarios masters '70s funk. It doesn't necessarily do anything new with the form, but its members dig deep within themselves to discover a personal connection to a groove that, for many of us, has never stopped. And don't get me started on that mad scientist of a musician, Argentina's Mati Zundel, who runs Brazilian music through a filter of cumbia.

Fast music, slow music. Chants, lyrics, instrumentals. Traditions, new sounds, never-before-imagined experiments. Will the ideas ever run dry?

I hope not. The sense of discovery is too much fun.

Mientras escuchaba la canción "Incendié" de Camila Moreno, me pregunté si en algún momento se acabarán las maneras creativas de expresarse que tienen los músicos latinos.

Cuando uno se pone a pensar, es un concepto bastante simple: ¿Cuantas maneras puede llegar a haber para reconfigurar los ritmos afro-cubanos, o la musica afro-peruana, y crear algo único y sin precedentes?

Esta semana la joven banda Making Movies (y su productor, Steve Berlin de la agrupación Los Lobos) nos ofrece una canción con letras profundas y un ritmo único: melodías rápidas pero que también parecen estar quietas y constantes.

Yo me crié en la década de 1970, y por lo tanto me impactó escuchar como la banda Los Empresarios, basada en Washington DC, manejan la música funk de esa éra como si no fuese gran cosa. ¿Hicieron algo nuevo? No. Pero lo que han hecho es buscar una conexión personal con ese género tan contagioso- un lazo que algunos de nosotros conocemos muy bien.

Hablando de música sumamente introspective- Mati Zundel, el científico loco de la música argentina, me alucinó esta semana. ¿De donde salen sus ideas? En su nuevo mixtape, el DJ reimagina la fantástica música brasileña a través del filtro de la cumbia.

Música rápida, música lenta. Cantos, letras, é instrumentales. Tradiciones, sonidos nuevos y sonidos jamás imaginados.

¿Alguna vez se les acabarán las ideas?

Esperemos que no. Nos estamos divirtiendo demasiado.
