Brian Blauser / Mountain Stage

The gifted pianist and soulful singer performs witty songs from his most recent album, Comfort in the Static.

Singer-songwriter Kenny White kicks off this edition of Mountain Stage, recorded live on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown. A gifted pianist and soulful singer, White spent years in New York City recording studios, where he wrote and produced countless television and radio commercials. His friendships with Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin led to his producing Colvin's Grammy-nominated I Don't Know Why, as well as arranging Cohn's wildly successful, platinum-selling debut record.

In 2002, White stepped out of the studio with his first solo record, Uninvited Guest. His Mountain Stage set includes two of the wittiest tunes you're likely to hear in a while: "She's Coming on Saturday," which draws instant comparisons to Randy Newman, and another that explains in no uncertain terms how to write a successful pop love song. One of the secrets: you "Gotta Sing High." White's most recent album is titled Comfort in the Static.

This performance was originally published March 29, 2012.
