Hear the story from NPR:

A fighter plane from World War II is uncovered just yards away from a beach in Wales. The American P-38 was flying a practice mission in 1942. Something went wrong with the fuel supply and the pilot made an emergency landing in the surf. He walked away leaving the plane behind.

A fighter plane from World War II was found this week, uncovered just yards away from a beach in Wales. The American P-38 was flying a practice mission in 1942. Something went wrong with the fuel supply and the pilot made an emergency landing in the surf. He walked away leaving the plane behind.

Over time, it was buried in the sand — and forgotten. The aircraft was first spotted last summer by a family on vacation in Wales.

Preservation groups have been studying it since then. They won't say where it is but they hope to recover the nearly intact fighter next spring.
