The Netherlands' prime minister is to tender his government's resignation to Queen Beatrix after the collapse of the ruling coalition. The smallest coalition party, D66, withdrew its support Thursday because of the Immigration Minister's treatment of a Somali-born Dutch politician.

D66 wanted the minister, Rita Verdonk, to resign after she had threatened to strip Ayaan Hirsi Ali of Dutch citizenship for lying about her name, age and refugee status on arrival in the Netherlands in 1992.

Hirsi Ali, 36, is the author of the screenplay for a controversial film about the treatment of women in Islam. The movie was directed by Theo Van Gogh, who was later murdered by a Muslim extremist. Hirsi Ali has had 24-hour police protection following threats to her life.
