Oliver Ames Students to Compete on 'High School Quiz Show' This Weekend

Oliver Ames High School students will compete against Hingham High School on the televised academic tournament “ High School Quiz Show” on Saturday, March 21. Contestants will be quizzed on current events, general knowledge and Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects including literature, history, science and math. This will be the sixth season of “High School Quiz Show,” which is hosted by Billy Costa. “WGBH is proud to bring an entertaining spin to the world of high school academics for the sixth year running,” said WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott in a press release.

The show was taped earlier this year in front of a studio audience at WGBH studios in Brighton. This is the first time Oliver Ames has made the top 16. Hingham has made the televised rounds each of the six years.

Framingham High’s team in WGBH’s High School Quiz Show won its match against North Quincy High School. The Flyers competing were Eli Bondar, Priyanka Roy, Jack Schneiderman, and Josh Werblin. Varun Tekur is the alternate team member. The show aired last night at 6, but was taped on January 31. Next up for the Flyers is the quarterfinals, already taped, but airing on April 21.

Hingham and North Quincy to compete on 'High School Quiz Show'

North Quincy High School students are getting ready to used their brains and buzzers to seek victory on WGBH’s“High School Quiz Show.” The school was one of 12 that scored high enough on a 75-question exam in November to qualify for the TV show. Ninety schools entered. North Quincy High has competed on the show twice before. It won the competition two years ago. The North Quincy team will battle Framingham High School a week from Saturday at the WGBH studios.

Bow’s first Granite State Challenge round to air on NHPTV on Saturday

Granite State Challenge kicked off its 31st season last Saturday with a win by Bishop Guertin High School over Goffstown High School with a score of 440 to 145. Team captain Timothy Morrison’s quick buzzer reflex established and maintained Bishop Guertin’s lead. Bishop Guertin now advances to second round. The popular quiz contest begins the season with 16 Granite State high school teams battling toward the title. Also, for a third year, there will be a Granite State vs. Bay State Governor’s Cup match between the winners of the Granite State Superchallenge and the WGBH Boston High School Quiz Show.

Central Catholic students on WGBH High School Quiz Show

After competing in auditions which included 119 other Massachusetts high schools, a team of students from Central Catholic has been selected to be one of 16 high schools to compete on WGBH’s High School Quiz Show. Central’s appearance on the WGBH High School Quiz Show will be aired this Saturday, Feb. 7  at 6 p.m. on WGBH 2. This is the first year that Central Catholic has competed in this popular televised high school quiz tournament. The Central Catholic team is one of only two private schools that made it to the final 16 teams.

Bishop Stang and Dartmouth high school students recently participated in the qualifying round for WGBH's "High School Quiz Show," which tests students on science, literature, history and other academic topics. Math teacher Tom Copps of Mattapoisett led the team, which included Paul Hoey of Westport, Gabriel Nadolski of New Bedford, Sofia Maietta of Middleboro and Jessica Rush of Marion. This marks the first year the quiz show is open to students in parochial and private schools. The top 16 teams will compete for TV time on the show on seven days in January and February. But while there have been several local competitors (Dartmouth High made the finals last year) she personally hasn't seen a local school compete. This year, she definitely will. Middle/high school principal Sean M. Gilrein announced that a team of students has signed up for the WGBH High School Quiz Show on November 16 in Boston. “Our goal is to become one of 16 Massachusetts schools to compete for the title of state champion,” he said.

On Nov. 16, 120 high schools from across Massachusetts, including Billerica Memorial High School, will compete for a chance to participate on season six of High School Quiz Show, the Emmy Award- and Parents’ Choice Award-winning program produced and broadcast by WGBH and hosted by Billy Costa.

Canton High to Compete in High School Quiz Show Qualifier

Canton High School will be one of 120 high schools from across Massachusetts that will compete for a chance to take part in Season 6 of the High School Quiz Show on WGBH. The schools will compete on Nov. 16 during “Super Sunday” at the WGBH Studios. Each academic team of four students will take an identical oral quiz of 100 questions based on the Massachusetts curriculum. The top 16 teams will advance to play on a televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament.

On Sunday, Nov. 16, 120 high schools from across Massachusetts, including Hopkinton High School, compete for a chance to participate on season six of High School Quiz Show, the Emmy Award- and Parents’ Choice Award-winning program produced and broadcast by WGBH and hosted by Billy Costa. During “Super Sunday,” each academic team of four students will take an identical oral quiz of 100 questions based on the Massachusetts curriculum at WGBH Studios in Brighton. Of the 120 teams registered to compete on “Super Sunday” this year, 36 schools, including 21 private and parochial high schools, are participating for the first time. This is the first year the tournament has been open to private and parochial high schools.
