89.7 WGBH, Boston's NPR Station, is a leading source for news and analysis in the Boston area.
Offering national programs, 89.7 WGBH is also a forum for the investigation and discussion of local issues within our coverage area. We strive to provide the context in which to better understand the issues and welcome participation from diverse perspectives. We aim to document and chronicle the voices, stories, ideas, and perspectives of our shared community.
89.7 WGBH also presents music programs, including NPR favorite A Prairie Home Companion, and programs devoted to Celtic music and jazz. These programs serve a spectrum of listeners, from the novice to the longtime music fan, presenting music in a friendly, informative manner.

• 1951: WGBH signs on the air in 1951 on 89.7FM with a live broadcast of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from Symphony Hall, Boston; call letters signify "Great Blue Hill," the site of the transmitter; licensed to the community through the Lowell Institute Cooperative Broadcasting Council.
• 1996: Online streaming launched
• 2000: Cape & Islands Radio stations sign on; WCAI 90.1 and WNAN 91.1, a service of WGBH
• 2004: First public broadcaster to launch a podcast
• 2006: 89.7 all-classical HD service premieres
• 2009: iPhone applications for online streams introduced
